Adventures & Excursions

The Coachella Valley can give you palm oases, waterfalls, high alpine forest, wildlife, desert preserves, and national-park boulders in one trip. It can also give you heat illness if you confuse enthusiasm with preparation. Choose by season, elevation, time, and ability.

Choose your landscape

Indian Canyons, Palm Springs

Best for: palm oases, varied trails, and a signature Palm Springs landscape on Agua Caliente land. Andreas Canyon is often the approachable first choice, while other routes require more time and fitness. Use the Indian Canyons guide.

Tahquitz Canyon, Palm Springs

Best for: a focused canyon hike with cultural interpretation and a seasonal waterfall. Admission, hours, and heat closures matter. Review the Tahquitz Canyon guide.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and Mount San Jacinto

Best for: high-elevation views, cooler air, forest trails, and winter snow conditions. Tram tickets do not eliminate mountain-weather preparation. Pair the tram guide with the state park guide.

Whitewater Preserve

Best for: wildland scenery, birding, picnicking, and trail access near the San Gorgonio Pass. Conditions can change after storms or fire activity. Start with the Whitewater Preserve guide.

Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve

Best for: fault-fed palm oases, gentler desert exploration, and understanding how water shapes the valley. Check current trail and preserve access in the visitor guide.

The Living Desert, Palm Desert

Best for: wildlife, desert gardens, families, and visitors who prefer established paths and facilities. It is outdoors, substantial, and best approached early in warm weather. Use the Living Desert guide.
