DAP Health is one of Palm Springs’ most significant community institutions. Founded in 1984 by community volunteers as Desert AIDS Project, it began as a response to the AIDS crisis and has grown into a broader health care organization.
From Desert AIDS Project to DAP Health
The historic name matters. Desert AIDS Project represents a community response to an urgent crisis. The current name, DAP Health, reflects an expanded mission focused on protecting and expanding access to health care across the diverse communities it serves.
Palm Springs Review will use DAP Health for the present-day organization while preserving Desert AIDS Project when discussing its founding and history.
Why the history matters
The AIDS epidemic profoundly shaped LGBTQ+ communities, including Palm Springs. DAP’s history reflects the work of local volunteers, health advocates, donors and community members who responded with care and action. Its continuing presence makes this a living community story rather than only a chapter from the past.
DAP Health today
DAP Health provides health services and community programs. Services, appointments, eligibility and locations can change, so readers should use the organization’s official resources for current guidance.
How visitors can engage respectfully
DAP Health is a working health organization, not a tourist attraction. Visitors can learn about its history, support its work or attend appropriate public events. Patient privacy and access to services must remain the priority.
