Children’s Discovery Museum: Hands-On Desert Family Fun

Watercolor illustration of hands-on discovery activities for young children in the Coachella Valley

The Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert in Rancho Mirage is an indoor, hands-on option built for active family participation. It works particularly well when desert heat, wind or a slower travel day makes an outdoor attraction less appealing.

Best for: families with children up to about age eight, multigenerational groups seeking an indoor activity and local families comparing a single visit with membership.

Know the age fit

The museum says its experience is most enjoyed by children up to age eight. Older siblings may still participate, but families should review the current exhibits and programs rather than assume the visit will engage every age equally.

Complete the waiver before arrival

The museum asks visitors to complete its online waiver before arriving. Doing that in advance can shorten check-in. Adults must be accompanied by a child, and caregivers are expected to remain with their children throughout the visit.

What to expect

The experience centers on play, exploration and shared discovery rather than passive display cases. Seasonal programs, classes and special events can add value, but they may have separate schedules or registration. Check the museum calendar for the exact day of your visit.

Practical rules

  • Prepare for cashless payment. The museum operates as a cashless venue.
  • Leave food and drinks outside the exhibit space. The museum does not allow them inside.
  • Plan without a stroller indoors. Strollers are not permitted inside, so ask ahead about storage and accessibility needs.
  • Bring identification when required. Discounted admissions may require matching ID or eligibility documentation.
  • Watch for temporary closures. Team training, exhibit refreshes and special programming can alter normal hours.

When to visit

The museum’s schedule changes seasonally and may include reduced summer days. It is especially useful as a midday or hot-weather anchor, but popular school-break periods may be busier. Verify hours and buy admission only from the official museum site.

Build a family day

Pair an indoor museum visit with a short, weather-appropriate stop rather than overloading young children. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is a separate, larger outdoor commitment; it usually works better as its own primary outing.

Verify before you go

Operating hours, admission, reservations, trail access, weather closures and individual programs can change. Check the Children’s Discovery Museum of the Desert before leaving. Information checked September 13, 2026.
